Understanding intersectionality is a critical component of any diversity, equity, and inclusion initiative.
We’re all made up of different identities from our age, gender, race and ethnicity, socio-economic background, religion and sexuality. We view the world through these different lenses at the workplace by virtue of intersectionalities, and certain policies and systemic practices impact employees differently, providing overlapping forms of discrimination and marginalisation.
When companies fail to acknowledge intersectional identities, they dismiss a part of a person’s identity. Catalyst research, for example, finds that 90% women from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups want to be leaders with influence and hold intellectually stimulating jobs, yet almost 60% experience an “emotional tax” in the workplace. This means they are ‘on guard’, bracing themselves for potential acts of bias or discrimination.
In this session, we will unpack intersectionality and focus on the actionable take-aways from Catalyst’s report, Intersectionality: When Identities Converge, including:
– Creating more opportunities for employees to self-identify, e.g., race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality?
– Taking stock of what data you are collecting and what’s missing
– Evaluating trends over time
– Focusing on inclusion rather than solely on demographic representation
We will discuss how we can apply these in our companies and better understand the complexity of multiple social identities in the workplace.
We invite business leaders, HR professionals, D&I professionals, and champions of inclusion to join us. Registration is complimentary for Catalyst Supporters.
