For employees to thrive within their workplace, they must feel psychologically safe or comfortable bringing their full authentic self without fear of being mistreated or penalized for making mistakes. Most individuals identify themselves beyond gender, class, and race. Understanding intersectionality—how social identities overlap with each other and with systems of power to oppress and advantage people in the workplace and broader community—is a critical component of any diversity, equity, and inclusion initiative.
