The Catalyst Canada Honours

The Champions!

The Catalyst Canada Honours inaugural champions have been selected—three leaders whose commitment to the advancement of women is exceptional.

They are: Ed Clark, President and Chief Executive Officer of TD Bank Financial Group in the Company/Firm Leader category; Colleen Sidford, Vice President, Treasurer of Ontario Power Generation Inc. (OPG) in the Business Leader category; and Sylvia Chrominska, Group Head of Global Human Resources and Communications at Scotiabank in the Human Resources/Diversity Leader category.

"Ten years ago, women in business had few visible champions. Today, we are particularly pleased to celebrate the leadership of the inaugural honourees," said Deborah Gillis, Vice President, North America.

Ed Clark's commitment to developing talent extends to a CEO's Assistant program that allows participants—half of whom are women—to gain experience, knowledge, and visibility by shadowing him. Colleen Sidford's approach to the male-dominated nuclear/utility industry was to introduce at OPG the emPOWERed Women program to provide networking and mentoring opportunities for women. Leading the Advancement of Women initiative, Sylvia Chrominiska built upon Scotiabank's inclusiveness to extend development opportunities and visibility to women around the world.

Women: An Accounting

Released July 8, 2010, Canadian Industry Snapshot: Advancing Talented Individuals in Accounting Firms, finds women are less likely to know how talent in firms is managed, to be advised by their managers about behaviors that are expected but not articulated, and to receive assignments that enable the acquisition of new skills. All of which deters from job satisfaction--and an employer's retention of top talent.
