From her beginnings in the working world, Ruby Chang was always driven to seek out new, challenging opportunities. Born and raised in Taiwan, Ruby was enticed by KPMG Taiwan’s international rotation program that would allow her to apply to work at other member firms. She joined KPMG Taiwan in 2012, and four years later left to join KPMG US where she works in Richmond, Virginia.

“Coming to a different country, a different culture, was challenging physically and emotionally,” Ruby describes, “but I had support not just in my career, but in settling in the US.” Ruby was paired with a “transitional coach” and mentors who helped her learn about both workplace-specific activities she could participate in and people she should meet.

Once she had found her footing in the United States, Ruby spoke up and sought out stretch assignments that would challenge her. As she built her reputation and delivered high-quality work, her colleagues were always supportive. She earned multiple high-profile, high-visibility assignments, including working with a private client on an IPO and taking the lead in bidding against other accounting firms for one of the firm’s large retail clients. She found herself working alongside managing directors and members of the firm’s board of directors, as well as having one-on-one interactions with national leaders whom she never thought she would meet, much less work closely with.

This visibility to senior leadership gave Ruby insight into how those leaders thought about strategy — knowledge she has shared with others. “These conversations,” Ruby says, “are a bridge to build connections, but also set up a platform to share different ideas so that different voices are heard.”

As an active member of the firm’s Asian Pacific Islander Business Resource Group (API BRG), Ruby has been selected to serve as a member of the API BRG-15 leadership council, where she collaborates with talent acquisition professionals to help recruit high-performing talent to the firm. Ruby described two activities that resulted from her BRG-15 participation that drove impact for her individually as well as for KPMG more broadly:

KPMG has summer interns every year, all of whom are encouraged to join and participate in the firm’s 10 BRGs. Ruby proposed a new national intern speed-networking event for the API BRG, where interns could meet one another and leaders at KPMG. Following the success of this initiative, this model will be implemented across other KPMG BRGs in 2025.
