On December 7, Catalyst India's Shachi Irde presented India Inc.: From Intention to Impact, a report concerning diversity and inclusion in the workplace as well as diversity programs currently in use in India. The presentation was also a dialogue between Shachi and the audience, who shared questions, thoughts and comments.  Following the exchange, Shachi led a panel discussion with panelists from BP, Shell, Schlumberger, and Three Fish Consulting.

Some takeaways from the event:

  • Awareness of biases can help employees as well as senior leaders change their approach to problems and challenges.

  • Employee resource groups are impactful to create an inclusive workplace. They can create mentors for employees, encourage them to share concerns freely and provide them with possible solutions.

  • Behavioral changes can be brought about over time by inculcating habits through policies and practices.

  • Senior leaders should set an example by acting as role models and mandating desirable diversity and inclusion behaviors for employees.

  • It is imperative to educate mid-level managers on the importance of diversity and inclusion as well as how it can be ingrained in a company's work culture.
