Read about last year's Catalyst Japan Solutions Summit.

It has been a year since The Act on Promotion of Women’s Participation and Advancement in the Workplace in Japan has been in place and we see many organizations gaining momentum toward their targets for improving gender equity. At Catalyst we hope to support as many of these organizations as possible by providing actionable tools and solutions based on our global practices and research. We also work to develop both our expertise as well as the expertise of our Supporter organizations in Japan, so we were honored to recognize five successful diversity and inclusion initiatives from companies that have identified and overcome challenges specific to Japan as recipients of the first Catalyst Distinction.

Incorporated in 2014, Catalyst Japan provides Japanese companies with D&I expertise and solutions acquired through more than 50 years working with leading organizations around the world. That expertise also serves as the backbone to Catalyst’s robust recognition programs, including the prestigious Catalyst Award

Networking Reception

On June 1, 2017, Catalyst Japan gathered companies from across industries for our second Solutions Summit in Tokyo. The event, which was attended by over 200 people from more than 50 companies, was not only an engaging and educational experience but also a stimulating networking opportunity for the participants.

For the luncheon panel, moderated by Michiko Imai, Chief Editor, President Woman, discussions were held with Christophe Weber, President & CEO, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Ltd, Denise R. Rutherford, PhD, President 3M Japan Limited, Keiko Takegawa, Director-General, Gender Equality Bureau, Government of Japan and Deborah Gillis, President & CEO, Catalyst. Each participant discussed the current situations and challenges companies face in Japan from both an internal and a global perspective. Although the successful integration of D&I practices is seen as imperative to a company’s success, many issues still exist both internally and externally that impede progress. In the latter half of the discussion, panelists discussed key initiatives and the importance of the inclusive leadership style, in order to effectively pursue and implement a diverse culture at the office and beyond.

This was followed by a short session from Laura Sabattini, PhD, Vice President, Research, and Chair, Catalyst Award Evaluation Committee, on the explanation of the content and criteria of the Catalyst Distinction in Japan.

Next, each Catalyst Distinction-winning initiative was officially recognized, followed by descriptive presentations from each of the companies. (Please read the Catalyst Distinction page for details.)

Tsukiko Tsukahara, Vice President, Catalyst Japan, gave closing remarks with an explanation of Catalyst Japan’s initiatives throughout the year of 2017, with an encouraging message to the participants to develop an inclusive culture and continue their pursuit of diversity.

At the end of the day, a networking reception took place, whereby speakers and participants enjoyed discussing and exchanging ideas stimulated by the day’s presentations.
