Women in Filmmaking
  • Women were 16% of all directors, executive producers, producers, writers, editors and cinematographers working on the top 250 highest grossing films in 2009 in the United States. This is a decline of 3 percentage points from 2001, but the same as 2008.1
  • Women accounted for 7% of directors in 2009, a decrease of 2 percentage points from 2008. 2
  • Only woman director, Kathryn Bigelow, has ever won an Oscar.3

  • Women were 27% of all creators, executive producers, producers, writers, editors & directors of photography working on the 2005-2006 prime time scripted and unscripted television season.5

  • Roughly 97% of television characters are heterosexual for the 2009-2010 television season on the five broadcast networks. 7
  • Eighteen series regular characters identified as LGBT on broadcast television schedule, an increase of two from the previous year. 8
  • Twenty-five series regular characters identified as LGBT on mainstream cable networks, a decrease from 32 the previous year.9
