Labor Force by Gender and Region, 2009 and Projected 2020, Ages 15+

United States

Canada

Latin America and Caribbean - Total

Europe - Total

While Latin America is projected to have a significant increase in both the size of the labor force and the number of women in the labor force compared to men, Europe is projected to stay rather static. Europe is dealing with a low or negative population growth and an aging population heading for retirement with not enough workers behind them to fill the vacancies. In Latin America, all age groups from 20 on are projected to show labor force growth. Europe, however, is projected to show a labor force decrease for worker age groups from 15-44. Workers in age groups 45-59 showed the only increase.

* Although women’s share of the labor force has increased almost everywhere, women are still less likely than men to be considered economically active. A major reason for the statistical discrepancy is the definition of “work.” National labor statistics generally count workers in or seeking employment in formal sector enterprises and not those engaging in unstructured and unregulated casual labor, such as petty trade, food processing, and domestic work, in which women are far more active than men.2

** Also includes Bermuda, Greenland, and Saint Pierre and Miquelon.

*** Includes area island nations as well as Melanesia and Micronesia.
