News Labor Force

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women made up 46.9% of people in the news analysts, reporters and correspondents category in 2010.1

Women in Newspapers

The American Society of News Editors 2011 newsroom employment census found that women made up 36.9% of the 41,608 total positions.2

Women in Magazines

  • In 2007, of the 203 issues of U.S. news magazines, Business Week, Forbes, Fortune, Newsweek and Time, women were the full photo subject on:
    • 22 covers of news magazines;5
    • had 65 full photo cover story bylines; 6
    • and 8 full photo cover credits.7
  • In 2006, of a total 200 issues, women had:
    • 70 full photo cover story bylines; 8
    • and 8 full photo cover credits. 9
