Diversity Consultant

Department: Advisory Services (AS)
Reports to: Senior Director

Responsibilities

The Senior Associate serves as a member of Advisory Services (AS) teams consulting to leading corporations and professional firms in the areas of diversity and workforce management, with particular emphasis on the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women. AS work focuses on diagnosis and strategic planning through high-level, collaborative client meetings as well as through shorter, focused Insight Sessions. The Senior Associate will advise clients in areas of expertise and participate in business development. He or she will manage and lead discrete elements of AS engagements and is accountable for leading teams to the successful completion of these elements. In addition, the Senior Associate is responsible for helping to advance Catalyst's knowledge base, serving as a knowledge expert on a range of subjects, and representing Catalyst at external events and speaking engagements.

Functions

  • Serve as project manager or team member for assigned Advisory Services projects/engagements under the direction of the Senior Directors and Vice Presidents.
    • Advise clients in shorter, focused engagements in areas of expertise and in overall change management.
    • Lead and contribute to elements of Diagnostic and Strategic Planning sessions. Design project plans; execute and/or supervise teams of all levels in the AS department, as well as independent contractors, for engagements or discrete pieces of engagements; contribute to session design, materials, and facilitation. 
    • Analyze and interpret the implications of data at a strategic level; respond to client data (workforce statistics, survey, focus groups and interview findings reports) in client meetings without preparation.
    • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses, synthesize data, and create compelling client-ready communications. Guide clients in their own data collection and analysis. 
    • Present findings, D&I Practices, and recommendations to client executives, in conjunction with Directors, Senior Directors, and Vice Presidents.
    • Liaise with client contacts independently, exercise judgment to resolve client/project issues or support project managers in client management.
  • Assist in new business development and represent Catalyst externally.
    • Handle inquiries by phone or in person from potential AS clients.
    • Shape and write proposals as requested, suggesting fees and project approach to be approved by AS leadership.
    • Develop a network of external resources and contacts who can be called upon for information and requests.
    • Disseminate information to corporate audiences, the general public, and media through speaking and writing.
    • Represent Catalyst at selected external events.
  • Contribute to Advisory Services operations and knowledge-building and cross-departmental/cross-Catalyst activities.
    • Identify and participate in the development of knowledge, tools, and departmental processes.
    • Develop recognition as an expert within an "issue specialty" area, or other Catalyst area of expertise.
    • Participate in selected cross-departmental activities.
  • Serve as a Member Liaison for five or more priority member companies.
    • Develop and proactively manage Catalyst's relationship with contact people and other designated individuals at assigned member companies; conduct and support new member pitches and maintain in-depth personal knowledge of Catalyst’s areas of expertise and service offering.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Understanding of corporate environments, issues facing working women and diverse groups, and knowledge of D&I practices.
  • Ability to think strategically about workplace issues and solutions.
  • Understanding of requirements for the successful implementation of D&I initiatives with global and regional demands.
  • Ability to interpret data and synthesize qualitative and quantitative data in concise language.
  • Ability to participate in and lead elements of internal/external meetings, contribute to the design and facilitation of workshops and training sessions, and deliver presentations.
  • Ability to juggle multiple project responsibilities and meet tight deadlines in a team environment.
  • Ability to convey knowledge within key areas of expertise in a compelling manner and contribute to the development of tools in those areas.
  • Ability to develop and manage a project framework and timelines.
  • Strong writing and editing skills and attention to detail when creating client-ready documents.
  • Computer literacy in a networked Windows environment; proficiency in word processing, the ability to use spreadsheet software and to create presentations.

  • Travel (typically less than 25% of time).
  • Heavy computer use and creation of client ready documents.

Education and Experience Requirements

This position requires a B.A. /B.S. and five years or more of business or consulting experience, or a Master’s and three years or more of related work experience. Experience and interest in addressing issues of diverse women and men and a focus on men as diversity champions is essential.  Global experience is a plus.
