Emerging Markets Librarian

Department: Information Center (IC)
Reports To: IC Department Head

Responsibilities

The Librarian conducts in-depth research and analyses for Catalyst staff, members, the media, and other requestors, trains staff on resources and technology, and performs a variety of functions related to the development, organization, and maintenance of the Information Center (IC) and its collections, specifically related to emerging markets as Catalyst expands its presence and knowledge into new regions of the world.

Functions

  • Develops specialized knowledge related to specific Catalyst markets, including Europe, India, Japan, China, and Brazil.
  • Works with key stakeholders, including Catalyst members, students, academics, government agencies, researchers, and the media, to determine specific information needs in a consultative manner and provides answers using independent judgment; on own discretion, determines internal or external experts and positively enhances Catalyst’s reputation as a critical resource on women at work.
  • Writes and updates IC knowledge products, including Quick Takes, First Steps, and members-only white papers on global diversity workplace issues.
  • Collaborates with Catalyst staff by independently collecting and analyzing data to be used to develop products and services.
  • Responds to the research needs of users by conducting effective reference interviews; performing research using the Internet, online services, and print resources; evaluating quality of resources; and creating customized reports.
  • Keeps up-to-date on new research, statistics, and trends related to Catalyst topics.
  • Synthesizes, reframes, and presents data from Catalyst reports.
  • Develops training materials and hosts staff training sessions on a variety of topics to improve employee productivity, understanding of resources, and technical capabilities.
  • Researches and selects stories to be posted to the Information Center’s internal Daily News.
  • Educates staff on diversity-related topics through a variety of mechanisms.
  • Fact-checks Catalyst knowledge products.
  • Participates in the training of new staff members.
  • Assists in developing, implementing, and maintaining library processes and procedures.
  • Represents the Information Center on cross-departmental work teams and committees.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong research and reference abilities.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Familiarity/experience with global statistics sources and other international resources.
  • Personal computer literacy in a networked environment with a Windows base. Proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel are necessary. Website understanding and abilities, SharePoint, database and other library software expertise is a plus.
  • Proficiency with MARC and Library of Congress classification system.
  • Ability to prioritize, as well as organize information.
  • Agility and flexibility to handle multiple and competing demands.
  • Ability to organize and manage own workload.
  • An understanding of, and commitment to, stakeholder service.

Education and Experience Requirements

This position requires an M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited institution or an international equivalent. Experience with basic library processes and procedures, as well as excellent organizational and communication skills are also required. 

Language Requirements

Ideal candidates must have fluency in English and at least one other language, preferably Portuguese, Mandarin, Japanese, French, or Spanish.
