Welcome
As we move into autumn, change seems to be not only a prevalent theme with regard to the falling leaves or brisk air, but also to the rapid shift in our global work environment. With more job mobility, diversity is no longer merely the right thing to do, but is vitally connected to competitive business performance.
While awareness of the need for diversity is an important step, there has been a growing emphasis on inclusion. Inclusion has often been referred to as having “an invitation to the party” or simply being able to participate. Only in a truly inclusive environment can diversity be leveraged and the processes to support the intention be put into place.
When the focus is more on how an individual’s strengths and talents can contribute to a cohesive team, we get closer to inclusive participation – and we notice that the most effective change and notable impact on business performance can occur.
Best wishes,
The Catalyst Europe AG Team

Save the date – the first-ever Catalyst Europe Symposium will take place on 11 June 2008 in Zurich and kick off a series of regionally-focused conferences that center on D&I as part of an organization’s change strategy. Swiss Re Company will be the lead sponsor and host for this year’s Symposium in Zurich. Over the course of next year, we plan to roll out the Catalyst Europe Symposia Series on a regional basis in order to examine the most culturally relevant themes, such as engaging men as diversity champions, accountability and metrics, and work-life effectiveness. Preliminary recommendations for subsequent meetings are London, Paris and Amsterdam. Interested sponsors and/or hosts should contact us for more information. |

At the 10th annual W.I.N (Women’s International Networking) Forum in Oslo, Catalyst Europe presented its new Double-Bind Dilemma for Women in Leadership: Damned if You Do, Doomed if You Don’t study and facilitated a panel about the future of corporate women. During the discussion, the panelists – which included representatives from member companies Hewlett Packard, Procter & Gamble, American Express and Infosys – acknowledged that although significant progress has been made with regard to diversity, challenges still remain. Catalyst Europe observed a clear eagerness to see more progress, as well as ensure the sustainability and impact of D&I initiatives.

What Switzerland can tell us about organizational D&I |

At the recent Diversity & Inclusion Switzerland Conference, Prof. Dr. Peter-Ulrich Merz-Benz expressed the need for a new understanding of the D&I concept: that Diversity & Inclusion should be referred to as Diversity = Inclusion when discussing federalism and its contribution to the cohesion of cultural life in Switzerland. He noted that a society’s many dividing borders (e.g. linguistic, religious, political) overlap and are connected by common life circumstances, thereby creating a new, unique cultural identity in what he refers to as a “transcultural” community. Federalism provides the framework for connecting these common life circumstances and different lifestyles in a society, and ends up equating the concept of diversity with inclusion. Is it possible to compare cultural identity to corporate culture, and if so, what daily “common life” experiences can contribute to – and provide the foundation for – a more inclusive workplace? |
