c3 is the monthly e-update highlighting the competence, connections and community at the heart
of Catalyst Europe AG and the global Catalyst network

Welcome
New thinking, real change - can an organization excel in both? When it comes
to diversity and inclusion in the workplace, we think so. And we know that our member organizations, like Catalyst itself, thrive on innovation as well as action to keep moving forward.

We hope that c3 ("c-cubed") will serve not only as a spark for reflection on diversity - its state as well as its destination - but also as an update on the
real-world measures that are making a difference. Whether you are looking
for information on ground-breaking Catalyst research or member diversity
and inclusion practices, an upcoming event or webinar, or simply the
perspective of renowned thought-leaders and diversity champions, you
will be able to find it here.

Enjoy the first issue of c3 and stay tuned for expert interviews, signature member events, news on the Catalyst Europe Executive-in-Residence program, and the chance to post your questions to the exclusive Catalyst member community.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or suggestions.

With best wishes,
Eleanor Tabi Haller-Jorden, General Manager, Catalyst Europe AG

News
Competence - new studies, learning and expertise
Stereotyping tied to the gender gap in European business leadership
The findings of Different Cultures, Similar Perceptions: Stereotyping of Western Business Leaders, a joint study between Catalyst and IMD, continue to gain momentum. In the ten-country study sponsored by General Motors and IBM, it was found that based on gender alone, managers have different perceptions of people's leadership effectiveness.
New global study reveals depth of conflict among women leaders
Building on two other Catalyst studies, a new study examines the issues faced by women leaders when they meet - or defy - gender-stereotypic expectations. The IBM-sponsored Double-Bind Dilemma for Women in Leadership: Damned if You Do, Doomed if You Don't study looks into the fallout of being perceived as competent or liked, and other "either/or" choices which can undermine women's contributions to an organization.
Global talent a focus of upcoming Catalyst research
The globalization of business and changing demographic trends, such as aging populations and the migration of workforces, have put increased pressure on companies to compete for talent. The Promise of Future Leadership - Highly Talented Employees in the Pipeline will identify the concerns of tomorrow's "stars" and explore career stages, including re-entry, to help companies retain and advance future leaders. The Pipeline study is sponsored by American Express, Lehman Brothers and Proctor & Gamble. Feel free to contact us about research sponsorship in 2007.
Catalyst 2006 Census attracts international attention
As you may have read in the International Herald Tribune, FT Deutschland or even in the Zuerichseezeitung, the Catalyst 2006 Census of Women Corporate Officers, Top Earners, and Directors of the Fortune 500 was sobering. Aside from the drop in the percentage of women corporate officers - 16.4% to 15.6% - women are still twice as likely as men to hold staff positions. As line position experience is considered essential to advancement to the highest levels, Catalyst continues to work with members to address the entrenched barriers that women face.
Exceptional business initiatives recognized by 2007 Catalyst Award
For 20 years, the Catalyst Award has been honoring the comprehensive and replicable initiatives of organizations that address the development of managerial women and promote diversity in the workplace. Goldman Sachs, PepsiCo, PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP and Scotiabank received this year's Catalyst Award and recently delved into their individual programs in four Catalyst webinars. Visit the MemberNet (members only) website for more insight into how diversity champions effect real change.
Sixty-four Catalyst Award-winning initiatives in one place
The Catalyst 20th Anniversary Awards Compendium is a collection of 64 initiatives honored by the Catalyst Award and detailing cutting-edge approaches to advancing women. Practical and hard-bound, the Compendium can be purchased on the Catalyst homepage.
Annual benchmarking study captures global imagination
With fieldwork complete, analysis of the data collected from Catalyst members across the globe for the Catalyst 2007 Member Benchmarking Report can begin. Upon its release in September, the study will provide participating members with an in-depth, accurate look at how their diversity programs are comparing with those of competitors, Catalyst Award-winning members and Catalyst members overall.

Catalyst Europe planning next stops in "roadshow"
Thanks to the generosity of sponsors like BP p.l.c. and UBS AG, Catalyst has been able to maximize its reach and spread the word about the business advantages of an inclusive workplace. Last year's Catalyst Europe Member Event Around New Thinking Tour, otherwise known as the CEMENTour, took Catalyst Europe to London and Zurich. For 2007-2008 the Catalyst Europe team is again inviting member companies to sponsor custom-designed Catalyst events around Europe. If you are interested in bringing the latest Catalyst research and insight closer to home, please contact us.
Catalyst's members-only website expanding
MemberNet continues to be one of the main draws of Catalyst membership, with its immediate access to free PDF's of Catalyst research, as well as insight, tools and templates to assist members in the creation and implementation of diversity and inclusion initiatives. Through the blog, members can also join conversations with Catalyst's senior leaders and other member organizations.

Catalyst Europe to host Master's candidates
Two Master's candidates from the University of Zurich will also join the Catalyst Europe team this summer. Completing their theses on the business case for diversity and the influence of diversity on team performance, the two students will undoubtedly complement the Catalyst Europe team with their fresh perspectives.
