C-cubed is the monthly e-update highlighting the competence, connections and community
at the heart of Catalyst Europe AG and the global Catalyst network

Welcome

Role models, mentors and access to networks – all invaluable tools for sharing information, learning and communicating new ideas. While the power of coming together to learn from one another is not a new concept, how effectively are we tapping into the resources available? And how influential is quality mentoring and modeling for an employee's success?

As evident in Catalyst’s latest study on women in high-tech careers (see News), the avenues of communication between employees and management are very important and can be the key determining factor in retaining an employee. In addition, this month’s thought leader, Dr. Helga Stödter, reflects on the value of networks and how critical it is that we share information. We hope these examples inspire you to leverage the power of effective communication and the many resources available.

Best wishes,
Catalyst Europe AG Team

Catalyst study highlights barriers of communication in the tech sector

Catalyst’s latest report Women in Technology: Maximizing Talent, Minimizing Barriers demonstrates that despite some progress over the past decade, women in the high-tech field still face barriers due to a lack of role models, mentors and access to networks. While women reported relative satisfaction with their jobs, they were less satisfied with employee-supervisor interactions and their companies’ approaches to fairness and voice. Because many people often join companies but leave supervisors, this report highlights the importance of taking action to improve employee-supervisor interactions, as well as providing opportunities for women to voice their opinions and be heard. Catalyst offered two Webinars, in which more than 700 global participants were able to hear first-hand about the impact of the study as well as pose questions. Members are able to access slides and audio from the Webinars on MemberNet.

All eyes on Spain and its approach to gender diversity

At the first Fundación Alares International Congress on 20-21 February in Madrid, Catalyst Europe presented its latest research report The Bottom Line: Corporate Performance and Women’s Representation on Boards. With over 1200 attendees, the international congress proved to be a great success with its focus on the most current D&I topics and trends. Additionally, Catalyst Europe also presented its research on 21 February at the Women’s Institute in Madrid. After Spain passed legislation in 2007, requiring companies on the stock market to have at least 40% of women at board level within the next eight years, the focus on gender diversity in Spain has been quite significant.

Catalyst Europe focuses on the European perspective at foundation

On 13 February, Catalyst Europe was honored to present at the French-American Foundation in Paris. With La Poste, L’Oréal, Gaz de France, Total S.A., RATP, IMS and the European Space Agency in attendance, Catalyst Europe’s presentation focused on D&I perspectives in Europe, particularly the cultural contrasts that exist between the US and European approaches to D&I.

Media Corner: Articles from different corners of Europe

On 11 January 2008, the Dagens Næringsliv, Norway’s leading business daily paper, featured an interview with Elin Hurvenes, founder of Professional Boards Forum in Norway. In the article, Ms. Hurvenes discussed Norway’s quota law and mentioned that “global interest in the 40% quota law was also fueled by Catalyst proving that women on boards improve financial results.”

The Handelsblatt, a daily financial paper in Germany, recently mentioned Catalyst Europe in its article titled “Die Weibliche Lust auf Karriere”. The article referenced Catalyst’s Different Cultures, Similar Perceptions: Stereotyping of Western European Business Leaders study, and delved into the topic of women moving into higher management and the barriers involved.

Passing the torch from one generation to the next

At 85-years-young, Dr. Helga Stödter (a lawyer, political economist, legation councilor and founding president of the EWMD – European Women’s Management Development International Network) spoke at the Wonder: Women’s World? 22. EWMD International Conference 2007 in Graz, Austria. As the keynote speaker, Dr. Stödter discussed the importance of “generation transfer” – how we share and pass on information, education, experiences and personal convictions from one generation to the next (and vice versa). Here is an excerpt from her message:

“But are we doing enough with regard to the importance and the success of networks? Does the older generation and, in my case, the very older one, do enough for those who will come after us? I don’t think so.

During the war, when it was obvious that it would come to an end, I asked Agnes von Zahn Harnack, an outstanding and leading woman of that time and the founder of the German Association of University Women, about our future professional possibilities. She replied, ‘We, the older generation of women, have worked for you, to enable you to study and to make it possible for you to stand on your own feet, to be independent and successful. We have opened the doors for you. Now it will be your turn to open more doors for the following generation and, more so, to help them to pass through them.’ This, for me, was like an order and I have tried to live up to it. Moreover, I am herewith transferring it to you!”

Are we doing enough with regard to networks, and the sharing of information? If not, what more can be done?
