C-cubed is the monthly e-update highlighting the competence, connections and community
at the heart of Catalyst Europe AG and the global Catalyst network

Welcome

Finding, recruiting and retaining talent is a challenge many diversity specialists know too well. Given all the talk of a talent shortage looming on the global horizon, understanding what attracts, engages and brings out the best of an employee has become more important than ever. But what really motivates an employee to stay at or leave a company?

According to Catalyst’s latest Global Talent Management study, retaining top talent involves much more than simply providing economic incentives. With the participation of nearly 8,000 executives from over 27 countries, this study takes an in-depth look at the values and level of engagement that appear to matter most to both women and men.

The eye-opening findings of this research will be presented for the first time in Europe at the launch of the Catalyst Europe AG Regional Symposia Series, held in Switzerland at the end of August. We would love to see you there and hear your perspective on such a vital subject.

Best wishes for the start of summer,
Catalyst Europe AG Team

Catalyst Europe morning event served up with fresh insight

At the second of a new series of breakfast events, Catalyst Europe presented its research on Different Cultures, Similar Perceptions: Stereotyping of Western European Business Leaders at UBS in Zurich. At the 22 May event, Catalyst Europe shared insights about culture-specific gender stereotypes as a barrier to women's advancement in business.

Swiss event tackles the dual-career challenge

On 29 May, Catalyst Europe spoke at the Kofrah Retraite – an equality conference for Swiss Universities – in Heiden, Switzerland. With the focus on dual-career couples, Catalyst Europe’s presentation, The Dual-Career Challenge: Managing the Tensions, addressed process management strategies and the creation of beneficial solutions.

Member women’s network takes a day to grow

Catalyst Europe was pleased to present at Ernst & Young’s GROW (Growth and Retention of Women) event on 5 June at the KKL Museum in Lucerne. The third event of its kind, GROW attracted 250 participants committed to investing in the growth and success of women. Catalyst Europe’s Eleanor Tabi Haller-Jorden facilitated a dialogue and action-planning session for all of the participants. The session – GROW Together: Driving change and creating impact at E&Y – offered participants opportunities to brainstorm meaningful and creative solutions for moving the gender diversity agenda forward.

Media Corner: Increased attention on the business case for D&I

Catalyst Europe AG was recently cited in an article appearing in the Swiss daily paper Le Temps. “Les sociétés les plus performantes ont des femmes dans leur direction” (23 May) highlighted Catalyst’s research and the business case for having women on boards. With women accounting for 60% of the talent available in Europe, the article emphasizes that including more women in leadership positions is no longer a feminist issue, but rather an economic issue.

Catalyst’s The Bottom Line: Corporate Performance and Women’s Representation on Boards research was also mentioned in the European Women’s Management Development International Network (EWMD) May 2008 President’s Letter. The letter highlights the importance of three: “In firms with a minimum of three women at the board level, rises in profit could be demonstrated. Findings also suggest that a firm needs a minimum of three women at the board for them to be able to exert their influence on the dominant culture of the group. The heroic single woman fighter will have no chance for transformation”.

Catalyst Europe AG Regional Symposium: Sign up now (Rüschlikon)

On 28 August 2008, Catalyst Europe will kick off its first symposium, Optimizing Leadership Decisions in Talent Management, at the Swiss Re Center for Global Dialogue, a short drive from Zurich. With Swiss Reinsurance Company as lead sponsor and host, this event will mark the European launch of Catalyst’s Global Talent Management Study, which delves into talent retention and engagement, as well as the impact of culture, gender, rank and generational differences. In addition to a presentation by Nancy Carter, Catalyst Vice President of Research, the day will feature a panel of representatives from Johnson & Johnson, IBM and Total, with the aim of moving from theory to practice. As places are filling up, we encourage you to register soon.

Catalyst Europe Ambassador Tour: Next stop, Spain (Madrid)

Since Spain passed legislation in 2007 requiring companies on the stock market to have at least 40% of women at board level within the next eight years, it is no surprise that the country is the object of much attention. On 18-19 June, Catalyst Europe plans to meet new and existing members on its Catalyst Europe Ambassador road show. In addition, Catalyst Europe will meet with the Instituto de la Mujer, the organization behind Spain’s legislation efforts.

Conference: Men as diversity champions (The Hague)

Catalyst Europe is pleased to present at Shell’s Global D&I Practitioner Conference on 26-27 June in the Netherlands. The objectives of this year’s bi-annual conference include: creating alignment behind one D&I vision at Shell, engaging external shareholders on what it means to be in the top quartile in D&I and connecting with senior business leaders. The focus of Catalyst’s presentation will be on men as diversity champions.

Global membership: Growing by leaps and bounds

We are happy to announce that Reuters and Sun Microsystems are the latest companies to sign up for Catalyst’s Global Membership. To learn more about the numerous benefits of global membership, feel free to contact us.

Talent management without borders – optimizing the talent within

“Belt-tightening times, such as these, force policy planners to re-examine budgetary priorities, and some may find it difficult to back programs they see as irrelevant to bottom-line considerations or outside immediate responsibility. In fact, efforts that encourage employees to identify and develop their skills and talents within the company – rather than leave to develop them elsewhere – through strategies such as talent coaching and peer mentoring, may yield an unanticipated high return on a company’s investment. An additional boon to D&I policy planners: talent management and career development strategies can enhance succession planning efforts. Strategic talent management makes most sense as an active partnership. Ideally, it enables employees to grow and change within the organization, and allows companies to help shape and leverage employees’ professional growth and engagement rather than be at odds with it.”
