Issue 15, July 2008
C-cubed is the monthly e-update highlighting the competence, connections and community
at the heart of Catalyst Europe AG and the global Catalyst network

Welcome

As the workplace expands globally, it’s tempting to assume that our approach to diversity and inclusion should be consistent and therefore uniform. But even the most subtle of cultural differences can have a profound impact on the execution and ultimate success of a global strategy. Awareness of and sensitivity to these differences is vital in addressing the challenges of the labor market and workplace.

In this month’s Thought-Starter section, a D&I practitioner from Spain shares his thoughts on the “cultural challenge” and how invaluable it is for business initiatives to take the cultural context into account with regard to gender diversity.

While the D&I approach may vary considerably from one country to the next, the common goal prevails – creating a fair and equitable environment for men and women.

Best wishes,
Catalyst Europe AG Team

New Catalyst research unlocks the secrets of the workplace

In the first of a two-part study, Catalyst’s Unwritten Rules: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt Your Career report examines the ways in which employees negotiate the maze of so-called unwritten rules – workplace norms and standards – that are not necessarily communicated directly or formally. Often these rules are communicated through informal networks, but previous Catalyst research has shown that a lack of access to these networks is one of the primary barriers to women’s corporate advancement, especially for women of color. A User’s Guide was developed to help facilitate conversation about these unwritten rules with employees, supervisors and work groups/teams and is available for members on Catalyst’s website.

New Catalyst research focuses on global topic with regional lens

On the 25th of June, Catalyst released its Career Advancement in Corporate Canada: A Focus on Visible Minorities ~ Workplace Fit and Stereotyping research report. This most recent report is the fourth in the landmark series and examines crucial aspects of career success, such as how well visible minorities feel they fit into the work environment and how they are perceived by others in the workplace. The findings show that – similar to organizations in other countries – Canadian businesses appear to be suffering from an “imperfect execution” of diversity and inclusion policies, and visible minorities appear to be at a disadvantage in terms of career advancement.

Catalyst Europe at home in global construction industry

Catalyst Europe’s Director of Operations Sophia Maria Würmli spoke on 26 June at the Sixth International Industry Seminar for women in the lumber and construction industries in Meran, Italy. The presentation, Women in Leadership Positions: Successful, Innovative, and Creative, focused on making the business case for gender diversity. The seminar attracted over 200 women in upper management and offered participants the opportunity for further training, as well as to network and share experiences.

D&I practitioners focus on “real-world” action based on research

On the 27th of June, Catalyst Europe’s General Manager Eleanor Tabi Haller-Jorden was pleased to present at the Shell D&I Practitioners Conference in The Hague. Catalyst Europe’s presentation focused on preliminary research findings from the upcoming report on Men as Diversity Champions, which will be released in October. With Shell D&I practitioners from around the globe in attendance, the event’s theme was “alignment, engagement and acceleration”. Catalyst Europe’s presentation also offered an action-planning section for practitioners to identify key intervention points.

2nd Catalyst Europe Symposium: Culture and workplace dynamics (London)

With a talent shortage on the horizon, it’s no wonder businesses are searching for the best, most effective way to attract talent. But what attracts talent to some companies and not to others? As research indicates, the corporate culture is a deciding factor. Catalyst Europe, in partnership with Opportunity Now, will delve into the vital subject of corporate culture at its second symposium on 15 October in London. With Lehman Brothers as sponsor of the event, the symposium will focus on how workforce changes are reshaping the workplace of the future and provide a stimulating forum for participants to put theory into practice. As seating is limited, please register as early as possible. To learn more about this event or to register, please click here.

Taking culture into consideration

“Shortly after joining GM in Spain, I had the opportunity to work several months in the States and discovered how robust and structured the approach to D&I was in comparison to what I was familiar with in Europe. Coming from a different culture where D&I inclusion initiatives were administration-driven and focused mainly on facilitating the access to work toward very specific groups of people (i.e., disabled, people over a certain age), the direct focus on gender and race was new to me.

At GM in Spain, as well as in other European GM business units, we have implemented common GM processes around common diversity themes: inclusion, retention, development and promotion of women, but we do it with absolute respect to local custom and tradition. The unifying principle which constitutes the base is the respect for the individual. We are convinced that without understanding the cultural differences in today’s global economy, business initiatives will fail. And on this note, it is important to recognize that, in our industry, car driving and car ownership clearly reside with both men and women.

As far as Spain is concerned, someone may still have in mind the “macho type” associated to the Spanish men. If you add that to the picture of a car, it is very likely, if you are a woman, that you think you have no chance to have a career in a car production company located in Spain. And this is my challenge: eliminate that image from the minds of women and receive their CVs because they want to work with us. So far, we are succeeding, and there are good examples that I can use in my conversations with new graduates. With regard to building our capability, we understand what we need to do to approach our global automotive market and diverse customer base. It makes perfect business sense that women get even more involved in designing, producing and marketing cars in our company.

My colleagues around Europe have also been working on this for some time. These efforts have been recently recognized, and two of our European women executives have been selected by an international jury to win the “25 Leading Women of the European Automotive Industry Award” awarded by motoring publication Automotive News Europe. This is another important reflection of our focus to become customer-driven, market-driven, and in full-step with the dynamics of the global business environment.”
