Welcome
New beginnings is the obvious theme for this time of year. New goals and plans are often made, each accompanied with the promise of a fresh start. While a goal is created with the best intention, it is not long before we are reminded that the difference between success and failure usually lies in the course of action taken. When evaluating D&I and goals for 2008, what actions still need to be taken to achieve your goals?
One approach or course of action (as described in our Thought Starter below) would be to broaden the policy of what D&I means in the workplace. Maybe it means adapting the work environment to make it a win-win solution for everyone to succeed? Or maybe it means taking a more informed, fact-based approach in order to find a better solution?
While a diversified and inclusive work environment may be the common goal, the approach may differ greatly from company to company. As you evaluate your goals for 2008, we encourage you to discover what broadening the policy of D&I means for your company and to take the best course of action to ensure the most effective results.
Best wishes for 2008,
The Catalyst Europe AG Team

Catalyst also facilitated interactive discussions on challenges and opportunities of workforce trends, the role of leadership with men as diversity champions, as well as action planning for leading and sustaining change. The event was generously sponsored by Ernst & Young and DuPont. |

As Switzerland prepares to co-host this summer’s 2008 European Cup, recent program changes made by the UEFA have made scheduling the Catalyst Europe’s June symposium in Zurich impractical. Due to these changes, Catalyst Europe has decided to postpone its June symposium until the fall. The symposium will mark the European launch of Catalyst’s Global Talent Management study, which focuses on generational, gender and cultural dimensions of talent management. More updates to follow. |

Notes from a Catalyst Thought Leader: Broadening the diversity policy |

“We have come a long way over the last 10 years. Although we’ve had a successful track record in national diversity, in the beginning we were almost complacent when it came to gender diversity. Initially, we hired women, put them in a male-oriented environment and thought we were being diverse. What we found was that women had to adapt to the male environment in order to succeed. We have learned quite a bit since then.
Since 2004, our focus has been on adapting our working environment to ensure it is more attractive to women. In 2007, we created an online network for women to connect (from junior to senior levels) within the organization. We also surveyed all female employees and took a more informed approach. We used the data to define minimum requirements for all field, often remote, locations with respect to suitability for females.
Ultimately, what we learned was that we needed to broaden our existing policies to establish a truly diverse work environment. These changes have been received well and last year we recruited over 1,000 new female graduate engineers. The attrition rate of women is as low as it’s been in recent years and the number of women in senior leadership positions has doubled in the last five years. In 2008, we will continue to focus on managing and implementing the results from our survey.”
