Welcome
Effecting change and impact is a topic often discussed among D&I professionals. In a time when change is expected to happen at a remarkably fast pace, it may appear that momentum forward is glacially slow, especially when we do not see immediate, significant results. Creating lasting change, however, requires innovative thought and time, coupled with consistent action and that most trying and time-intensive virtue: patience.
As expressed in this month’s Thought Starter, effecting change may also require communicating even the smallest successes with regard to D&I, and realizing that with every step forward, there is directional momentum. While change can be subtle, and sometimes slow in coming, make no mistake, it is there, paving its way.
Best wishes,
Catalyst Europe AG Team

The Alliance for Board Diversity – a collaboration of Catalyst, The Executive Leadership Council and the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR) – released on 16 January its second report Women and Minorities on Fortune 100 Boards. The most recent findings from the study – benching progress on Fortune 100 boards for women, African Americans, Hispanics and Asians – show that there has been little change in overall diversity on corporate boards since the last report in 2005. More specifically, white men still hold a huge and disproportionate share of board seats. For more details on the findings of this report, please click here. |

Notes from a Catalyst Thought Leader: The value of small wins |

“I think that implementing diversity programs and effecting change sometimes don’t go hand-in-hand. This is why, in my opinion, when implementing a diversity program it needs to be relevant to the business function in order to effect change. For example, within HR, to discuss diversity in terms of ‘recruitment’ is good, but to actually ‘use’ diversity (seeking out underutilized minority groups) to meet the business goals for recruitment has two benefits: increasing diversity and achieving the business goals. So, simply put, making diversity relevant to the business goals benefits both.
There is a danger of a loss of credibility with diversity programs (and diversity professionals) if progress is too slow. Often diversity programs are trying to effect cultural change and this does take time, but there is the need for the visible “win” in the short term as well. I think that can be achieved through better communication. For many companies, diversity is not communicated properly or often enough and it leaves the impression of little or no progress. As a diversity professional, I see small wins every day, and one of my tasks is to start to highlight those successes to a wider population to reassure them (and myself) that progress is being made.”
