C What's Happening

Celebrating Champions at The Catalyst Canada Honours

On October 18, we will celebrate and honor three individuals at The Catalyst Canada Honours for their commitment and achievements toward the advancement of women in Canadian business. The champions will be recognized at a dinner at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto chaired by Bill Downe, President and Chief Executive Officer, BMO Financial Group. There’s still time to sponsor a table. Inquire at [email protected]. And Catalyst Canada will be ringing the opening bell at the Toronto Stock Exchange that morning. We look forward to seeing our friends and supporters at the dinner.

Challenge, Imagination, Commitment

Ilene H. Lang, President & Chief Executive Officer, Catalyst, will be participating in two events during the Women's Forum for the Economy & Society in Deauville, France, on October 13. At the CEO Champions Meeting, a global CEO-only group designed to drive progress and accountability for women's advancement within the private sector, she'll speak about the latest Catalyst research and its implications. For the Barclays Women on Boards panel, she'll moderate on the topic of "Influencing Female Advancement: Do Quotas Trump Merit?"

Catalyst Spoke Out in September

September was a busy month for Catalyst staff with appearances around the globe at numerous events including: Catalyst President & Chief Executive Officer Ilene H. Lang presented on the topic of Closing the Gender Gap on Corporate Boards at the Second Annual SAIS Global Conference on Women in the Boardroom; Ms. Lang also participated in a panel entitled Women at the Top: How Diverse Leadership Benefits Everyone at the 2011 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Women and the Economy Summit (WES); Nancy M. Carter, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Research, Catalyst & Visiting Scholar, INSEAD, presented on Mentoring: Necessary but Insufficient for Advancement and Why Men Still Get More Promotions Than Women at the Annual Women of CoreNet Global Conference; and Catalyst convened its inaugural Corporate Board Governance Symposium bringing together thought leaders to better understand why female representation on corporate boards has stagnated.

Break Through to the C-suite

Catalyst President & Chief Executive Officer Ilene H. Lang takes part in a panel discussion on the theme of "Breaking Through to the C-suite" at Deutsche Bank's 17th Annual Women on Wall Street Conference held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York. As we move into the future, companies that build and sustain diversity in their senior leadership will be more likely to avoid missteps, capture greater market opportunities, and increase their competitive advantage. Find out how you can break through. Register for the October 19 event here.

Mixed Leadership — Does it Make a Difference?

Quotas for women in management, gender-specific targets, and the benefits of combined teams are often discussed within companies and in the press. What are companies doing specifically? What action is required to recruit more qualified women for management positions? Join Eleanor Tabi Haller-Jorden, General Manager of Catalyst Europe AG, on November 3 to explore these questions at this year's Diversity Roundtable Switzerland symposium. Register here.

Paying Tribute to our Foremothers

The National Women's History Museum hosts the de Pizan Honors, a gala event paying tribute to women from the past and present who have played a major role in our nation's narrative. The event will take place on November 16 at the Ronald Reagan Center Amphitheatre in Washington, D.C. Tickets are available online. For more information contact [email protected].

As We C It

Female Firsts Only Go So Far in Bioscience

Catalyst's Anika K. Warren, Ph.D., Senior Director, Research, wrote a guest post for Catalyzing, where she discussed her latest report, Checking the Pulse of Women in Bioscience: What Organizations Need to Know. As Anika made clear, the bioscience industry impacts everyone. And the lack of women in leadership can have far-reaching implications.

Sponsorship Matters: Six Things You Should Know

The recent Catalyst report on sponsorship was based on interviews with sponsors and protégés, and yielded some eye-popping revelations of the powerful impact of sponsorship. For those of you who think sponsorship is only important to the protégé, Deborah Gillis, Senior Vice President, Membership & Global Operations, shared six things that all members of the workforce should know in CanCon.

No Question Too Big

The engagement of men and the alignment of personal and workplace values emerged as pressing themes in recent Catalyst Europe events and discussions, as well as in CORE. How do managers gain credibility with diverse constituents, and how much does this depend on "cultural" IQ? How can we ensure that personal and workplace values are part of career conversations? Find out more about Catalyst Europe Strategic Focused Interventions (SFI) — expert advice in real time.
